I didn't know that yams grew on trees! I thought you had to dig them out of the ground.

Thanks for the idea.Grew mine in a free styro carton.Cut the base out and filled with soil. Two years later the carton cracked in two and I have a 30 pound yam.Makes digging the yam out very easy.

Wow! This is amazing! I like the video. I bought some purple yam at the farmers market and planted the head in a pot. I live in an apartment and I put it on my patio. Now the vine is growing and heading in the direction of the trees. Can I cut the vine to stop it from growing?

What do you eat? The aerial bulbil and the ground yam, which I had when I lived in Papua New Guinea in 1982/83 and really enjoyed it, or just the ground yam.
I wonder if Sweet Potato would climb like these fellows?
Do you know if yams only grow in the tropics Marabou?
Thanks for a cool, learning video... Note to self, use grow bags or have lots of plastic pots... Cheers Mate David. -
That is so cool!
I've been investigating subtropical and tropical veggies that produce a lot of food. I just discovered pigeon peas yesterday!
Now, I live in E. Orlando so can you tell me please, where exactly did you get your yam to start your plants and what month do you start them in?
Fresh and Fancy Fruit up on E. Colonial had two yams there the other day. They had a white yam that looked similar to a stretched coconut and then they had these yellow yam things that look like Jurassic Park! They were cut and the yams were all crooked and huge. I don't know if they cut off a tap root or what, but there were a lot of cut areas on the pile. I didn't pick them up because I was in a hurry and just came in to see what their meat specials were going to be for this week.
In another video showing Jamaican cooking, a lady had a yellow yam that she said if you touch it while peeling it that it makes you itch and you have to use paper towels to peel it??? Are all of these yams like that?
I saw in yet another video, the guy in Tampa said that the yam was slimy like okra until it is totally cooked. I hate okra.
I really, really want to grow these yams but I want to make sure I get a really good one and I am aware that there are differences.
All I have currently are a bunch of air potatoes that I've been trying to get rid of and when I first started searching online, I thought that I actually had a yam and am greatly disappointed, Boohoo! -
yay like my name

How long for this harverst, please?
-
How long did the yam grow from start to harvest? Nice Yam......
-
Are the aerial bulbils edible also?
-
Thanks for the heads up on how to propogate also.

Wow what a great idea. I like the flexible grow bags. An alternative if you are super cheap (I am) is to find large baskets or hampers at thrift stores and line them with old sheets or tablecloths (also at thrift store), wicker laundry baskets, wicker laundry hampers, outdoor planter frames would all work if you are looking to recycle and repurpose.

Thank you very much for the reply.:-)

You can either plant an aerial bulbil, or a chunk of the underground yam, preferentially the top end of the yam. You can usually find these at grocery stores. Peel and cook until soft, use like a potato.

What starts this off? And how do you eat this?
-
Very cool. Good job with your project, dude.

Congratulations. Now that's a success. I'm going to post a link to this in my newsletter this week.
